Connecting with the trees through the leaves

If you have ever experienced a sauna ritual, you are likely to have been whisked. This ancient practice of tapping or brushing with tree branches, is an integral part of sauna, and has many benefits to the mind, body and spirit.

What are sauna whisks?

Sauna whisks are small bundles of tree branches, usually of Birch, Oak or Linden. During a sauna ritual, a sauna master will use whisks to tap the skin, and bring the heat from the steam down onto the body. The rhythmic rustle of the leaves, and the sensation on the skin, can be very comforting, and helps to calm the nervous system.

How can sauna whisks help us to connect with Nature?

When we collect tree branches and leaves from the forest, we are opening to the energy and healing of the woods. The unique qualities of each tree, can bring healing, protection and knowledge into our lives.

“Every flower has its fairy, every tree its spirit. Every woods has its Lady of the Woods. The world is filled with spirits and energies that play upon us and dance about us daily. Through Nature, we open doors to that often supersensible world of spirit.”

Nature Speaks – Ted Andrews
